A fast-moving and tricky low pressure system is headed towards parts of the Arabian Peninsulua with various weather conditions from gusty winds, dusty conditions, clouds, rain, and thunderstorms. Different impacts over different countries.
Periods of rain seem likely in Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. The probability of rain is moderate in Qatar and Bahrain, while it is low in Oman and the UAE, except for moderate chance in extreme northern areas north of Ras al Khaymah (UAE) and Khassab (Oman).
Friday Feb 24, 2012:
An upper-air trough heads towards eastern Mediterranean, and will be located over NW Arabian Peninsuluaia by end of Friday. A broad area of surface low pressure is expected to form over NW porton of Arabian Peninsulua. During Friday, clouds and rain will develop over the Mediterranean countries especially Jordan and Palestine, while Sina’a in Egypt will also experience rainy conditions. Clouds and rain will extend to NW Saudi Arabia by end of Friday.
Saturday Feb 25, 2012:
Conditions will quickly develop as the upper-air trough deepens further when it arrives over NE Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq. The surface low will deepen as well, reaching 1000mb, and will be centered over NE Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Periods of rain will develop over Kuwait, Iraq, Iran, and NW Saudi Arabia. Later during the day a cold front is expected to develop from central Saudi Arabia to Iran, passing by the Arabian Gulf coastlines. Thunderstorms will form along the cold front, and some might be strong. Some thundershowers will develop over Red Sea coastlines of Saudi Arabia. The deepening surface low will cause winds to blow at gusty speeds towards the centre of the low, resulting in dusty conditions in central Saudi Arabia, before the arrival of thunderstorms and clouds. Gusty dusty southerly winds will reach Bahrain and Qatar by end of Saturday. Southerly dusty and gusty winds will gain speed over much of the UAE, except for the east coast. Rough sea conditions.

Sea level pressure and surface winds at 12GMT on Feb 25. areas located eastward of the surface low will experience southerly dusty winds.
Sunday Feb 26, 2012:
The low is expected to depart quickly from Saudi Arabia, with a surface trough over the Arabian Gulf. Ahead of the trough, southerly gusty and dusty winds will become strong at sometimes over much of the UAE during the early hours of Sunday, bringing sandy and dusty conditions. Cloudy periods are expected over the UAE, with low chance of showers offshore and over extreme northerneastern and mountainous areas of the UAE, including the east coast. Thundershowers will reach Khassab (Oman), and possibly Gulf of Oman. Winds to become westerly by end of Sunday. Rough sea conditions.

What about the temperatures? Are the winds gonna be cool or warm?
@meteo .. are there any new developments in this weather front since some isolated thunderstorms are now forecasted for dubai on sunday ?
Holy Cow.. There is a strong convection occuring this morning.. the cumulus humilis clouds turned into a cumulunimbus calvus (or cumulus congestus) is just 5-7 min! I couldn’t believe as you can see those clouds rising up so fastly..! Although it didn’t rain here in Yanbu.. the nearby mountains are surely effected by this rain.. I wish it rains here as well (its raining in tabuk)
@Ady
Mostly no rain for Dubai. Dusty weather is coming.
@1234
Yes probably in the afternoon hours it might spread. But it will remain scaterred covection.
@Shahzeb
warmer of course, but not that hot.
@meteo.. After half an hour of convective clouds, the wind picked up and still it hasn’t stopped! There are so many trees uprooted and I have never seen any windiest day than this one in my life! Even though the wind was around 60 km ph, It is still in effect and was blowing really hard for like 5 hours…! in yanbu.. you can see this in the history.. http://wx.hamweather.com/local/sa/yanbu/pastweather/day1.html
@1234
Interesting day isn’t it?
That was a lot of winds. The low pressure is quite deep (997mb) which resulted in winds accelerating towards the centre of the low near Kuwait. This also made the cold front quite intense while passing by Riyadh as a sandstorm followed by thunderstorms hit the capital. It should stabilize in ksa tonight, as the wind energy shifts to the UAE.
A tree got uprooted near my house..

Wow! There is a sudden Dust storm in #Dubai. Never saw this coming!
Quite windy and dusty conditions in Sharjah and Dubai.. i hope it brings in some thunderstorm too though highly unlikely !
Some light rain on the bypass road from Dubai towards Sharjah.
@Tom
You just witnessed a dustshower
Its incredibly cold right now. It might have rained somewhere.
Last night was absolutely MAD! It was extremely windy as if a tornado was near by or something! Anyone knows what was the approximate speed of the winds last night? I could have sworn it hit late 40′s or more! It first started around 12:00 am and it rapidly became stronger and louder over an hour banging the doors and windows, until finally at 5:30 am its stopped as though nothing happened.
@Alya
Winds in AD gusted to 70 km per hour as many places in the UAE recorded similar wind speeds. I know that Maktoom Airport recorded wind gust of 80 km per hour. That was ugly.
@Ozair
Cooler as this is what low pressure systems do, drawing in winds from various directions. A cold front is passing, bringing winds from a different air mass
OMG!! 70 kmp! Augh no wonder I can’t get over that, it was so disturbing for 5 and a half hours continuous!! lol
