A spectacular and deep low pressure is expected to batter the Mediterranean countries on Friday and Saturday Feb 17 & 18, 2012.

A deep upper low coupled with a deep surface low (around 995 mb) will be centered over northeastern Mediterranean sea on Friday Feb 17th.

High winds will accompany the low, with wind gusts reaching between 50 and 100 km/hr over different parts of Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and Jordan. High winds could cause dusty conditions in Egypt and desert areas of Jordan.

Downpours and thunderstorms will be common especially over coastal areas, while mountainous areas have the potential of seeing snow that could be heavy at times.  And the weather will become significantly colder.

Sea level pressure map predicted by GFS model for Feb 17 at 9 GMT.

Why don’t WE have low pressure forming in SAudiarabia.. but in Mediterranean? I think the temperature is hotter here than the Mediterranean..is this the cause of prevailing winds or earth’s ratation? :?

  2. mahdi says:

mid latitude low pressure tent to form and amplify in the regions of high thermal wind that is, large meridional temperature (thickness) gradient, this condition is persist in Mediterranean not Saudi Arabia. you can see this in thickness map. closer thickness contours can be seen over Mediterranean.

    Yes I agree Mahdi
Such lows form in mid latitude regions where temperature difference is higher. You can see from the upper low map the sharp 500mb height gradients which helps intensify the surface low.

Usually in saudi Arabia and the gulf we get affected by cold fronts extending from these lows when the pass east over Iraq and Iran. In some rare cases, the centre of the low can be located more southward over north ksa and Kuwait.
