An upper low pressure system extending to Southwest Asia helped bring first rain of the season on Thursday to extreme northern parts of the UAE, mainly in Ras Al Khaymah, as well as Musandam area in Oman. Thunderstorms formed offshore and moved towards the coast, delivering heavy bursts of rainfall with some hail that flooded wadis. Such rainfall is considered quite early in the season as October is a very dry month on average. Meanwhile, this upper low is bringing nicer weather to the UAE with some fresh winds.

Monster Tropical Cyclone Giri has formed in Bay of Bengal and is headed to Burma (Myanmar). The cyclone could pack sustained winds up to 115 knots (a category 4 cyclone according to Saffir-Simpson scale), gusting to 150 knots. Either way, the storm will deliver heavy flooding rain, high waves, and damaging winds. Day-time temperatures are expected to decrease during this weekend across the UAE. While remaining generally warm, it will be noticably cooler. Highest temperatures might hover around 34-36c, a decrease of 3-4 degrees from the current daily maximum temperatures of 38-40c. Night-time weather should also improve. By the start of next week, a slight increase in temperatures is expected.

A low pressure weather system centered over southeastern Europe near Turkey brought rain and thunderstorms to eastern Mediterranean (mainly Lebanon, Palestine, and coastal Syria) with some rain and thunderstorms extending inland to Jordan and other parts of Syria. During the early hours of Oct 8th, 2010, a belt of thunderstorms were moving east toward Lebanon and Syria (see below image) The low pressure system could bring good amount of rain (around 25 mm) to coastal Lebanon and Syria.
