A deep 500mb upper low with cold air aloft is quickly diving southward from the Middeteranian towards the Arabian Gulf (from Wednesday Dec 30th to Saturday Jan 2nd). During its track it is going to unleash powerful thunderstorms and heavy rain over western Iran and southern half of Iraq especially the iraq/iran border where more than 2 inches of rain is possible. Thunderstorms (though not as strong) will also erupt over Kuwait and NE Saudi Arabia near the Kuwaiti border. Between Thursday Dec31st and Friday Jan1st, Bahrain and Qatar will have a chance of thundershowers as the upper low dives to the eastern shores of the Arabian Gulf.

Sharjah Thunderstorm Dec 25, 2009 (Source: Gulfnews)
A few rounds of scaterred showers and thunderstorms have affected the UAE early Friday to Saturday (Dec 25 – 26). Showers have also affected the UAE during the last weekend on Dec 18 and 19. One particular thunderstorm on Dec 25 affected Sharjah, Ajman, and Umm Al Quwain produced incredible lightning (mostly cloud-to-ground) and very loud thunder even though it was not a big storm, but strong enough for small hail to fall.

A cold front coming from the northwest could result in a few showers and thunder-showers over the UAE late Friday and early Saturday. Higest chance is over northern UAE.
