The upper air trough will deepen over the next few days with a higher chance of thundershowers in the UAE between Dec 3rd and 7th. Highest chance will be on Fri 5th and Sat 6th Dec. A shortwave 500mb trough will affect the UAE. Unfortunately, moisture will not be abundant. Otherwise, things could be much more wetter. Cooler weather is also expected. The system could also affect Northern Oman.

On another subject, meteorological winter has started on Dec 1st, 2008 which extends till end of Feb 2009.

Recap of the thundershowers:

Well, there have been some amazing lightning and thunder shows (see below) with the thundershowers that affected the UAE between Dec 3rd and 7th. The strange thing about these thundershowers is that they concentrated mainly on the coastal areas of the UAE (Northern and Eastern Coasts). It seems the storms depended on the temperature difference between the warm gulf water and cooler air aloft. I’m thinking whether that is similar to lake-effect snow in the US.

Anyways, the storms were patchy but heavy, which resulted in different conditions within cities. While hail was falling on one side of Sharjah, the other side (hardly 15 mins away) was calm. Nevertheless, the storms were numerous enough that almost all coastal areas from Abu Dhabi to Ras Al Khaymah were affected in addition to the East coast (Fujairah and surrounding areas).
