A Deep Low Pressure System to Hit the Middeteranian Countries and NW Saudi Arabia Jan 17-18

A very powerful low pressure weather system is going to impact eastern Egypt (Sinai expecially), Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine and NW Saudi Arabia. There might be severe thunderstorms in Sinai, NW Saudi Arabia,  and very heavy rain in the Middeteranian countries. All of that will happen on Sunday and Monday.

24-hour forecasted rainfall between 12 GMT Sunday to 12 GMT Monday. Notice the extreme rainfall.

24-hour forecasted rainfall between 12 GMT Sunday to 12 GMT Monday. Notice the extreme rainfall.

Later more low pressure systems to continue impacting Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Jordan until Jan 20 (possibly) with rain accumulation reaching 200mm along the coastal areas (but no impact on NW Saudi Arabia).

I would say the mountaineous areas on NW Saudi Arabia and Sinai areas in Egypt should consider the possibility of flash flood.

2009 – 2010 Winter So Far in the UAE and the Gulf

Since we have gone through around 40% of this winter which started in December 2009 and lasts till the end of February 2010 (meteorological winter). I have a few points to highlight:

Surface Chart. High Pressure dominates the region

Surface Chart. High Pressure dominates the region

  • Precipitation: Late November and December were wetter than normal across many parts of the Arabian Peninsula, the Arabian Gulf, and the Gulf of Oman. All gulf countries experienced rain this Decemebr including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and the UAE. Two areas of exceptional rainfall: 1) Western Saudi Arabia along the Red Sea, especially Jeddah and its surrounding, where floods have wrecked havoc on Jeddah late November with probably more than 100m in less than 24 hours if not less than 12 hours. 2) The UAE between Dec 11 and 13 experienced heavy rain and thunderstorms with more than 100mm of rain accumulation in central UAE, mainly between Abu Dhabi and eastern mountain of the UAE near Al Ain and Oman borders. Around150mm were recorded in Al Foah in the UAE in just 48 hours. Another good thing about December is how frequent those troughs and low pressures were … Continue reading 2009 – 2010 Winter So Far in the UAE and the Gulf »»»

Hail in Sharjah Jan 1st, 2010 (Photo from storm.ae)

As explained in the previous post, a deep 500mb upper low moved across the UAE, resulting in a cold front that swept through the UAE on Jan 1st, 2010. While doing so, it resulted in some scaterred thunderstorms and hailstorms, passing by the the Arabian Gulf after affecting Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and parts of Saudi Arabia. Later, the storms affected Oman and Gulf of Oman.

Highest rainfall was in Jais Mountain (Ras Al khaymah) with 35.8mm. Sharjah Airport recorded the 2nd highest amount of 15.6mm, followed by Ras Al Khaymah Airport with 11mm of rain.

Parts of Sharjah and Dubai got hit by hail which was exceptionally heavy in some areas of Sharjah.
